Rajasthan's climate is decisively seasonal, and the time of year has a direct effect on comfort, pricing and what's realistic to fit into a day of touring.
October to March is the classic touring window. Daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius across most cities, dropping cooler in the desert at night — ideal for fort visits, walking tours and desert camping. December and January are the coolest and busiest months, particularly around the Christmas and New Year period, so hotel rates and availability tighten accordingly at popular palace properties.
April to June brings serious heat, with daytime temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. This period suits travellers prioritising lower rates and quieter monuments over midday comfort, with touring best scheduled early morning and late afternoon.
The monsoon (July–September) is lightly visited but has its own appeal: the desert landscape turns briefly green, lake levels rise, and palace hotels often run their best value rates of the year. Rainfall is generally moderate rather than heavy compared with coastal India.
For most first-time visitors and for photography-led or wedding-related travel, we recommend building the itinerary around October–March, with December and January reserved well in advance given demand at the region's signature heritage hotels.
